Οι τότε συγκάτοικοι Gebbia και Chesky, καθώς δεν μπορούσαν να πληρώσουν το ενοίκιο του διαμερίσματός τους, αποφάσισαν να μετατρέψουν το σαλόνι τους σε ξενώνα bed and breakfast, προσφέροντας σε τρεις συμμετέχοντες του συνεδρίου στέγη, φουσκωτά στρώματα (αέρα) και σπιτικό πρωινό έναντι πληρωμής.
